Adult Services
The Department of Mental Health (DMH) offers mental health services to adults through the Community Services Agency (CSA). The services are available at three major centers in Northeast, Southeast, and Northwest Washington that are operated by the DMH/CSA. Residents may also receive mental health services from a network of providers certified by the department.
Round-the-clock emergency psychiatric services are provided through the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program, based at DC General Hospital. Mobile crisis teams can be dispatched as needed throughout the city. Additionally, DMH/CSA provides mental health services to people who are homeless. In-patient services are available at St. Elizabeths Hospital, the District's public mental health hospital.
DMH Access HelpLine
DC residents can obtain mental health services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling the DMH Access HelpLine at 1 (888) 793-4357 or 1 (888) 7WE-HELP. Residents may also obtain in-patient services by calling the HelpLine; a clinician helps patients and their families decide on the best facility for in-patient services. In-patient facilities include St. Elizabeths Hospital and community-based hospitals, such as George Washington University Hospital, Howard University Hospital, or Georgetown University Hospital.
